ABOUT THE PROJECT
Since the 1950s, the Reverend Michael E. Haynes bore witness to major events in the lives of the Black residents of Roxbury in the pages of the Boston Chronicle or in his sermons. Oral historian, griot par excellence, Rev. Haynes was also a punctilious archivist. Newspaper clippings, binders of Sunday bulletins, folders of historically valuable photographs and reels of sermon tapes are now to be preserved for future generations. Through the non-profit Michael E. Haynes Legacy, Inc. the family of Rev. Haynes will establish the Michael E. Haynes Reading Room in Roxbury and has a partnership with the Institute for the Study of the Black Christian Experience (ISBCE) at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminar and Northeastern University to digitalize his archives so that neighbors and scholars may have access to them. The Michael E. Haynes Reading Room will be available as a space for research and reflection on the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Michael E. Haynes.
